November 2008

National Native Month AMERICAN / CANADIAN (Designated to honour and recognize all Native, Indigenous, and Aboriginal of not only the Americas but in the world.)

November 11 Remembrance/Veterans Day – Canada, UK, United States, France
Honours the soldiers, who were killed in World War I and II; the exact date may be a little bit earlier or later in the countries other than Canada.
November 13 World Kindness Day – United Nations
The purpose of World Kindness Day is to look beyond ourselves, beyond the boundaries of a country, beyond culture, race, religion; and realize we are all citizens of the world.
November 15 Nativity Fast – Eastern Orthodox
Also known as “Little Lent”; it lasts until the Feast of the Nativity, December 25.
November 16 Louis Riel Day – Canadian
Aboriginal Louis Riel Day in Manitoba falls on the third Monday of February instead; until 1885, Riel was the political leader of the Métis; he led a rebellion against the Canadian Authorities and was charged with high treason, found guilty and sentenced to death; his name is a symbol for Native independence.
November 16 Day for Tolerance – UNESCO
The appreciation of diversity, the ability to enjoy one's rights and freedoms without infringing on those of others: tolerance has always been considered a moral virtue; this day was designated to be a reminder.
November 21–25 Canadian Aboriginal Festival– Canada
The largest Aboriginal multi-disciplinary arts event in North America celebrates its 15th anniversary this year; takes place in Toronto, ON.
November 27 Thanksgiving – United States
Celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November; it is a time for family and food and marks the unofficial beginning of the winter holiday season.
